My name is Matt. I was born in 1975 to a man and woman I have never met. I was blessed to receive two loving adoptive parents and was raised in Fort Wayne. When I was eight, I discovered their liquor cabinet. I opened a bottle, and had a drink.
I started drinking and smoking pot in middle school. My freshman year, I moved on to harder drugs like acid, speed and cocaine. I ended up dropping out of school and marrying my young girlfriend. The marriage didn’t last. The next several years were a blur. I moved a lot and was in and out of jail. I was married again, unsuccessfully, and had 2 kids. But partying and jail time kept me from being the father they needed.
By this time I was drinking so much that I started having seizures. The “friends” I had been staying with kicked me out. I had nowhere to go, so I pitched a tent along the river. That was in early January 2011. One day in March, I realized I couldn’t do it anymore.
I fell to my knees and begged God for help. I simply screamed, “God help me!” I lay down for the night not knowing what to do with my life. The next thing I remember is standing in front of The Rescue Mission.
Since coming to The Rescue Mission, I have become a true believer in God and His Son, Jesus Christ. I have become sober; I’ve not just stopped drinking and using drugs, but have found a new way of living. I have become an honest, kind, trustworthy and responsible person. I continue to set new goals, and have learned how to cope with obstacles. I am studying for my GED, and plan to attend Ivy Tech to attain a master welder certificate.
Without you, I, and many others, would not be alive to say thank you. God started the process and led me here. But my recovery process would not have been complete without you. Thank you!
